By far the most beautiful and successful grass for southern homes is Charleston Grass. Some call it St. Augustine, it is in its native environment. Charleston Grass does well with oak trees and magnolias. It is well suited for Lowcountry soils and is salt tolerant!
With its broad leaf it will beat out most other grass species.. Once well established this hardy grass is drought and heat tolerant.
Many new developments in the Charleston area are sodded with Centipede grass. This Chinese import is also know as "lazy man's grass" or "poor man's grass" to describe this species best feature: low maintenance. The leaf blades are thin and it grows dense so it grows tall more slowly meaning less cutting. The Lowcountry climate and humidity are ideal conditions for Centipede Grass.
