CUDWEED. It's everywhere and is one of the first to appear in disturbed soil. Mowing distributes this annual as, like it's cousin the dandelion, its seeds have a soft plume that floats in the wind distributing this weed widely.
Mowing down the seed stalks prior to full bloom helps, but, like all annual weeds, pre-emergent herbicide applications are the best way to mitigate Cudweed. Heller's, Shiny, and Wandering are several varieties of Gamochaeta. Post-emergent mitigation use Metsulfuron.
Lawn Burweed (Soliva sessilis), AKA Spurweed, Stickerweed, or around here "Burr's, hurts, and is common in Charleston lawns. Hooked spines cover the plant. PULL UP this weed. Even dead, the burr's remain. If you pre-emergent herbicide was applied this winter Burweed should not be a problem. Also known as Carolina Pony foot, this weed is common in shady, moist areas in the South East. Not to be confused with Dollar Weed but looks just like it only smaller. Weed control applications that work well on Dichondra include most broad leaf herbicides.
